Course description

This course is a three session course running on the following dates:

Monday 6th March 2017

Monday 13th March 2017 &

Monday 20th March 2017

You are required to attend all three sessions

Target Audience – every governor of Primary, Secondary, Special Schools & Academies, in your first 6 months as a governor.

This course is essential for all new governors and has been restructured to focus more strongly on School Improvement, and to reflect the most recent changes in education.

Delegates require no prior knowledge of governance, but our course tutors modify their approach to suit participants’ needs.

The aim of the new induction course is not only to inform delegates of the principles of governance, but also to give practical guidance on how all governors can play an active part in leading their school, in partnership with their head teacher.

Part 1 of the course explores the purpose of governance, considering the governing body’s statutory responsibilities, and introducing the three core strategic functions of governance.

Part 2 is the heart of the course, explaining your governing body’s strategic role in holding the school to account for how well pupils learn. The course lays out in plain English how a school leadership team (including the governing body) evaluates its school’s strengths and weaknesses, and then determines its improvement priorities. Delegates will discover how different sources of information and advice are available to help governors monitor progress.

Part 3 provides an introduction to your governing body’s role in overseeing budget and staffing matters. In addition, this module also provides practical advice on delegating tasks across the team, and running effective meetings.

This course is available in several formats:

  • A single whole day session
  • Three evening sessions of 2½ hours each
  • As a Cluster/Partnership Induction session.

Please Note: Lunch is provided for full day training. If you have any dietary, visual, auditory or access requirements, please make us aware when booking your place on each course.
