Course description

Background:- Barry Carpenter, CBE, OBE, is professor or mental health in education at Oxford Brookes University, He is an honorary professor at universities in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Australia. Barry has held the leadership positions of headteacher (in Warwickshire), chief executive, principle and director of the centre for special education at Westminster College, Oxford.

Barry currently chairs the National Association of Headteachers’ ASC and Girls Forum which produced the guide ‘Girls and Autism: Flying Under the Radar’ in 2016. Barry along with other regarded specialists in this field has recently contributed to and edited ‘Girls and Autism – Educational, Family and Personal Perspectives – Routledge 2019.

 

‘Often thought of predominantly a male disorder autism can go undiagnosed, unnoticed and at times unsupported in girls with consequences for their social and mental well – being.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS:

1)    Conversations with young girls with Autism in Warwickshire - Personal reflection

 

2)    Act for Autism - the workshop will focus on the 3 C Pathway.  Simple strategies that               

can help autistic girls feel connected, calm and able to communicate their feelings

and needs thus supporting greater success in all aspect of life.

 

Outcomes of course:-

·       An understanding of the theory and approaches associated with Girls and Autism

·       A knowledge of practical school based strategies

·       A shared understanding of the key issues for girls with autism and their families. 

 

·       An opportunity to share practice in schools
