This is a 3 day training package designed for the class teacher and the teaching assistant.
The programme is aimed at Yr 1 children who despite targeted interventions have made little progress. It is also appropriate for Yr 2 /Yr3 children who are functioning well below expectations. It is also very suitable for the pupils with an EHCP requiring intensive intervention. The pilot study indicated that the earlier the intervention the greater the impact in terms of giving children better access to whole class teaching.
It is essential that an experienced Teaching Assistant who has worked within the Literacy Hour delivers the programme. It is based on a two day rolling programme, a Reading day then a Writing day. Each session lasts 20 minutes. The daily programme will continue until the teacher feels the child can benefit from less intensive teaching, or for a maximum of 20 to 22 weeks.
(The pilot study indicated the TAs who already had experience of managing an intervention found the training more manageable and overall, enabled the children to make quicker progress.)
Initially, TAs will work on a 1:1 basis with 2 children. As they become familiar with the structure and teaching of the sessions, they will work with one or two additional children each day. Time recommendation is 1 ¼ hours for three children each day. This allows time for preparation. Timetable amendments to the TA’s current workload will be required. The class teacher will be expected to support the TA and monitor the programme. This will include observing two sessions.
Between each session the TA will be asked to try out what has been learned, with the teacher’s support. It is therefore important that 2 hours are allocated between each training day for the completion of tasks. All tasks set will be of benefit to children working well below expectations (previously W1 /P7).
