Course description

There’s a saying that “we value what we measure”, but it’s more important that we “measure what we value”. As school governors, we really do value pupils’ learning outcomes … so every governing board needs an insight into how these are measured by our education professionals.

The aim of the session is to promote governors' understanding and practical use of data, as part of the wider monitoring picture; however this is a course about school improvement, not statistics. The approach is a pragmatic look at the questions raised by our schools’ main data sources, helping governors from diverse backgrounds to understand the terminology, and to relate data to real school performance. Delegates will consider not just overall average data for pupil attainment and progress, but will also examine the performance of vulnerable groups of pupils, in particular disadvantaged pupils.

Following the closure of the DfE’s RAISEonline system in July 2017, this session will focus on the high level Analyse School Performance (ASP) report, before looking in more detail at the more comprehensive IDSR – the Inspection Data Summary Report.

Before attending the course, it would be useful for delegates to request their school to provide a copy of its latest ASP and IDSR, and if available, the FFT Aspire School Dashboard for Governors & School Leaders.

The tutor will discuss a range of sources of data, including the school’s own internal tracking, and will outline recent DfE initiatives, for example assessment without levels.
