Course description

This course provides an overview of the latest Ofsted school inspection framework. Changes were introduced in 2017 and 2018 to the timing and follow up of short inspections of Good schools, and inspectors’ approach to performance data is evolving, with a stronger focus on pupil progress than attainment, and an intention to avoid “over interpretation” of small data samples . Key resources for this session are the latest Ofsted Inspection Handbooks (updated December 2017).

The aim is to familiarise delegates with the implications of inspection for their school as a whole, and specifically for the governing board as part of the school leadership team.

The course examines the main Ofsted judgment headings and grades, and considers how an effective school self-evaluation (supported by robust evidence) is essential. The tutor will outline the inspection process, explore the kind of questions asked of governors by inspectors, discuss useful sources of evidence, and share a range of practical suggestions to help your governing board prepare in advance of the inspector’s call.
